Arabella

Osran and I had just arrived back to the inn and sat down to eat when the first guard entered. It was the way he tensed when his eyes landed on me that made me aware he was there for me. He immediately marches my way, followed by more guards.

What could I have done? I know we weren’t seen leaving the library. I’ve barely spoken to a soul since we arrived! They have no reason to be looking for me!

“Arabella?” The first guard growls, trying to get around Osran.

“Who wants to know?” Osran growls right back.

Another of the guards slips past Osran, grabs me by the arm, and yanks me from my seat.

The motion pulls me from my state of shock and my brain starts functioning again.

“What the hell? Let go of me, asshole! I haven’t done anything!” A loud clap of thunder shakes the dining room, like it’s emphasizing my anger.

Everyone stops for a moment, no one moving or talking; just listening.

Another roll of thunder rumbles as I try to wrest my arm from the guard’s hand, but he’s too strong. I try prying his fingers apart, but that only makes him squeeze my arm harder and it really starts to hurt.

Glancing over, Osran is fighting the other guards, giving it all he’s got, though he doesn’t seem to be winning. One guard is on top of him, raining down punches, as the others restrain his arms and legs. His shirt is ripped, his face is bloody, and one of his eyes is already swelling.

Inspecting Osran, and the state he’s in, gives the guard holding my arm the distraction he needs to lock shackles around my wrists. I twist my head back to him so fast my neck pops. Eyes wide, I stare at my hands, unable to comprehend what’s happening. The cool metal of the bindings is a contrast to the warmth of my skin. Again, I pull back, the cold steel biting into my flesh.

“It will hurt less if you simply come along,” he says as he starts pulling me from the dining room.

“Arabella!” Osran is still fighting, screaming my name, with blood pouring down his face. “I’ll find you! I promise!”

“Osran! Stop fighting the guards! You can’t help me if you’re dead!” I yell back at him, my voice cracking, not sure when I started crying. I’m also not sure if he’s able to hear me over all the noise the crowd is making as they are trying to get outside.

Finally, the guard pulls me through the front door kicking and screaming, tears streaming down my face, and out into the street. The moment I’m outside, I feel droplets of water hitting my arms. I stop resisting and glance around, trying to figure out where it’s coming from when I notice the townspeople all looking upwards.

The guard stops short, causing me to bump into him and come to a stop myself. It’s then I realize it’s gotten darker outside. Peering up, I see a bird flying through the dark clouds that have rolled in, and that it’s raining.
